John Russell was a very talented wing half who was a regular in the ‘Well side until Willie Redpath made his first team bow during season 1946/47. John slipped down the pecking order and had to settle for a place as a reserve despite some good form early in his career. His outings were limited during the 1947/48 season but he became more of a regular the following year filling in for Don McLeod. Russell arrived at Fir Park from Pollock Juniors, it was in August 1950 he departed the club as Kilmarnock were tempted to spend £1,500 for his services. The wing half enjoyed his time at Rugby Park more as he would make well over a century of appearances but he helped Killie get to the 1952 Scottish League Cup Final but they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of defending champions Dundee.
