Archie Shaw

Archie ShawBorn in Netherton, Archibald Hamilton Rammage Shaw, or ‘Baldy’ Shaw as he was affectionately known, joined the club in 1942 from Wishaw Juniors. A legendary left back who served the club as a player for over fourteen years, Shaw went on to become coach and finally groundsman. Shaw was so often compared to Ben Ellis, the great Motherwell left back of the 1930’s. Archie was never a great goal scorer, he nevertheless netted his first goal for the club early in his career, in a match against Partick Thistle in 1942. He wouldn’t net again until a Scottish Cup tie against East Fife in 1947.

With another Motherwell legend Willie Kilmarnock, Archie formed a full back partnership that lasted fourteen years, a record surely no other club can boast. The Kilmarnock-Shaw full back partnership was ended when Kilmarnock went on to join Airdrie.

Archie was a regular in the side throughout the 1940s and 1950s and he won both League and Scottish Cup winner’s medals. He also gained Scottish League caps and he was a fearsome competitor in any side in which he played. So much so that when he stepped down in 1955, he was thrust into the reserves and became an excellent coach. He made a brief comeback in the first team in the season of 1957/58, before solely concentrating on coaching. Archie’s final ‘Well game came in 14th December 1957, when Motherwell defeated Aberdeen 4-1 at Fir Park.
