As Motherwell legends go George Stevenson must rate pretty highly. He was a brilliant and skilled inside forward and played in the famous ‘Well side of the 30s winning the Scottish League in season 1931/32 and playing in all three Scottish Cup finals reached by Motherwell in the 30s versus Celtic in 1931 and 1934 and Clyde in 1939. Unfortunately, Motherwell were defeated on all three occasions. The first going to a replay after Allan Craig scored an own goal in the first game. ‘Stevie’ also enjoyed an illustrious international career winning 12 caps for Scotland and scoring four goals.
After the Second World War, George took over the manager’s position from John ‘Sailor’ Hunter. In 1950 in its fifth year, Motherwell won the newly formed League Cup beating Hibernian 3-0 with goals from Forrest, Kelly and Watters. George took Motherwell to another Scottish Cup final in 1951, losing again 1-0 to Celtic. In 1952, under the leadership of George, Motherwell won the Scottish Cup for the first time in the clubs history, beating Dundee 4-0 with goals from Watson, Redpath, Humphries and Kelly.
