Hugh Strachan

Hugh StrachanHugh Strachan signed for Motherwell in 1957 arriving from Cumnock Juniors. A native of Kilmarnock, he proved to be a versatile player as not only could he slot in comfortably in a attacking position but he could also hold his own in defence as he was a solid and robust defender.

He found his time at Fir Park frustrating as first team opportunities proved to be elusive. Hugh eventually moved onto Morton in 1962 for a free transfer where he would go onto win two Second Division Championships as well as a League Cup runners up medal. He would spend one season with his hometown club Kilmarnock but he failed to hold down a regular starting berth before heading to Maryhill to join Partick Thistle.

While at Firhill he perhaps achieved his best career honour when he played his part in the Jags major upset in the 1971 Scottish League Cup Final when they humiliated Celtic 4-1 with all of Thistle’s goals coming in an impressive first half. Upon retiring as a player he headed back to Greenock where he would join the Morton coaching staff.
