Joe started his football career as a fifteen year old at Eddie Turnbull’s Aberdeen side. Joe was farmed out to Banks O’Dee, with whom he won Scottish youth caps. From there he worked his way into the reserve side, then the senior side. He went on to play under managers Ally MacLeod, Billy McNeill and Alex Ferguson. For much of the 1977/78 season, Joe was side-lined because of a serious leg injury. When Ally MacLeod arrived on the Fir Park scene, Joe Smith was top of his wanted list. It cost Motherwell £40,000 to bring Joe to Fir Park. He made his debut in a home 1-1 draw with Partick Thistle in December 1978 and from there Joe went on to be a consistent performer over his three seasons at Fir Park. He lost his place in the Motherwell side late in the 1980/81 season, due to the stiff competition from Joe Carson, Graeme Forbes and Steve McLelland. Joe’s elder brother, Jimmy, had preceded him to Aberdeen.
