Neil Simpson signed for Aberdeen in 1978 and played a major role in the club’s success under Alex Ferguson. He made his league debut for Motherwell in a 1-0 win over Airdrie at Broomfield on 24th August 1991. He made his Scotland debut in 1982/83 and was capped 5 times in total. It’s a shame that Neil Simpson is remembered for that tackle on Ian Durrant because he was a fine player who enjoyed great success. If course, not much of that success came with Motherwell, who he joined from Newcastle United just a couple of months after the 1991 Scottish Cup final win. He played 33 league games for the club, scoring one goal but felt his best days were already behind him. Nevertheless, the Durrant incident could not be laid to rest and he returned to his native north-east to find employment in the Highland league with Cove Rangers.
