David Turnbull

Raised in near by Wishaw, David Turnbull joined the Motherwell Academy in 2009. As a nine year old, the talented youngster had made quite an impression when playing for his boys club Newmains Hammers in that both Old Firm clubs as well as Aberdeen and Falkirk as well as a host of English clubs were all desperate to land him. In May 2009 he was mentioned in a local newspaper article about being a wonderkid and one to look out for in future.

The midfielder made some great progress from a young age, in 2014 he was selected to play for the Scotland team (represented by North Lanarkshire school pupils) at the 2014 International Children’s Games where he also played alongside team mate Jake Hastie. Additionally, in April 2016 David was part of a talented young ‘Well side that won the Scottish Youth Cup when the side defeated Hearts 5-2 at Hampden. When Premiership clubs were allowed to enter the Scottish Challenge Cup with under 20’s sides, Turnbull played a pivotal role when the young side managed to upset the likes of Edinburgh City, East Stirling, Queen’s Park and Sligo Rovers who were all dispatched from the competition over a number of years.

David made his first team debut in February 2018 when the side beat Dundee 2-0 at Dens Park in a Scottish Cup tie, he would get his first start for the club in the penultimate fixture of the 2017/18 season when the side defeated Partick Thistle 1-0 at Firhill, he followed this up with a start versus Hamilton Accies in the final league game of the season which ended in a 3-0 victory for the Steelmen.

An elegant midfielder, Turnbull is certainly one of the most gifted youngsters to come through the youth ranks in recent times, his passing ability and eye for goal quickly won over the ‘Well fans, he broke into a struggling Motherwell side in October 2018 and wouldn’t look back as his tremendous form certainly made him on of the first names on the team sheet, almost immediately he had scored crucial goals against fellow relegation strugglers St Mirren and Dundee which helped secure a precious three points in both matches.

Such was the early impression he made, numerous clubs were rumoured to be circulating as he was out of contract at the end of the season but after weeks of speculation he would put pen to paper on a new two year deal as he looked to continue his development at Fir Park.

As the season wore on he scored winners in a 1-0 win over both Hibernian and Dundee, by now of course the side had turned from potential relegation candidates to top six challengers in the league.

At the official end of season awards (2018/19), Turnbull cleaned the house as he won the Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, Top Goalscorer and the Goal of the Season (versus Dundee 3rd November 2018) awards.
