A small tricky winger, Dom Thomas started his footballing career with his boyhood heroes Celtic but he was released due to his slight frame before joining the Motherwell Academy. It was clear the youngster had talent in abundance and his performances in the youth and reserve sides certainly made a lot of people sit up and take notice, most expecting him to be the next break out star. Under manager Stuart McCall, Dom appeared regularly on the bench but couldn’t quite get a taste of first team football, it wasn’t until new manager Ian Baraclough came along that he would finally get his first chance and this came during the 2014/15 season when he came on as a late substitute in a vital 1-0 win over St Mirren.
Despite being a high performer for the U21 side, Thomas just couldn’t seem to replicate these performances for the senior side, he did show moments of magic and the trickery he possessed in his locker but it was’t enough to cement a regular first team berth. During his time with Motherwell, when he was used it was mainly as an impact sub as 33 of his 39 appearances came from the bench.
Dominic did make a number of starts against lesser opposition namely Greenock Morton and East Stirlingshire in the League Cup but he really struggled to shine which typified his performances for the Steelmen. He would later find himself further down the pecking order when Chris Cadden emerged in the first team and grabbed the chance with both hands.
In January 2017, Dom joined Championship side Queen of the South on loan for the rest of the season and he would really enjoy a fruitful spell as not only did he finally cement a regular start in side but he also netted his first senior goal against Dundee United with a stunning effort from range, furthermore following this up with a double against Dumbarton. Many Motherwell fans shared the view that the youngster may have benefitted greatly had he been sent out on a development loan earlier.
During the 2017/18 pre-season, manager Stephen Robinson made it clear he was behind the likes of Elliot Frear, Craig Tanner and Chris Cadden and that he thought it would be best that he go back out on loan again, Thomas made it clear that he didn’t want to remain at Fir Park, he eventually joined Kilmarnock who were managed by former ‘Well favourite Lee McCulloch.
Perhaps the biggest highlight for Dom in his Motherwell career was no doubt winning the 2016 Scottish Youth Cup with a stunning 5-2 victory over Hearts at Hampden.
