Nicknamed ‘Sodger’, George was an ex-soldier who had been stationed at Hamilton Barracks when he signed for Motherwell from Motherwell juniors in 1928. This inside-left had been a prolific scorer in the reserves ringing up a total of 55 goals in the 1930/31 reserve season. However, he couldn’t manage to hold down a firm first team place at the club and left to join Maryhill club Partick Thistle. Amazingly thought in an early appearance on 27th October 1928 at Brockville he managed to score an astonishing six times as the ‘Well defeated Falkirk 7-0 in a league game. If he kept this up every week, he’d have become a ‘Well legend. As it stands however he’ll just be remembered for this one occasion.
