Jimmy was born in Plains, Lanarkshire. He played for the club between 1943 and 1952. His partnership with men like Archie Kelly and Jim Forrest made the ‘Well a high-scoring side. Jimmy scored Motherwell’s goal in the 1945 southern league cup final, when Rangers pipped Motherwell 2-1. He was something of a goal expert, as his games to goals ratio proves – Scottish Cup 51 games 21 goals, League Cup 26 games 10 goals, Summer Cup 6 games 7 goals and in the league 195 games 66 goals. In the 1952 Scottish Cup win Jimmy netted the opening goal against Dundee. A few weeks later after the final he left the club in controversial circumstances. Jimmy however did enjoy a highly successful spell in England with Huddersfield Town before heading back up north to finish his career with Dunfermline Athletic.
