Lawrie had a brief spell with Motherwell during a goalkeeping crisis in 1980. He is more readily associated with Dumbarton, for whom he played many years making over 300 appearances for the club. At Motherwell he kept goal for four league games while on loan for a short spell, he served Dundee during the 1980/81 season as well as his career was on the wind down.
