Stevie Woods

Stevie WoodsAlthough born in Glasgow, Stevie entered the senior game with Hibernian. He was spotted whilst playing with Kilpatrick BC and moved to Easter Road at a time when a fellow by the name of Andy Goram was the regular keeper. An offer of £75,000 persuaded Preston North End to part with the keeper, he joined the club in August 1994. In his first full season he played 33 matches. Drama was never far away and in a league cup tie back at Clydebank in 1995 Stevie made the kind of return few could have imagined. An injury to Mitchell Van der Gaag, when Motherwell had used their two outfield subs threw the bench into confusion until it was decided that Stevie could be used outfield. With Motherwell he never could keep the number 1 jersey as he was a very inconsistent keeper, he lost out to the likes of Scott Howie, Mikko Kaven, Mark Brown, Andy Goram and Francois Dubourdeau. His worst appearance must go down as the 7-1 demolition job done by Celtic in season 1998/99, a lot of people felt he conceded too many easy goals. In season 2002/03 he was Motherwell’s first choice keeper, he was playing really well and making some great saves but it turned sour after a 5-1 defeat by Livingston at Fir Park, he was to make only another five appearances that season, he joined St Mirren on a free the next season much to the delight of many ‘Well fans.
