Bobby Young

Bobby Young

Bobby Young signed for Motherwell in 1959 where he came straight from junior football as he had been plying his trade with Neilston Victoria. He would win 4 Scotland schoolboy caps and proved to be an exciting talent, it was actually legendary manager Bobby Ancell who had spotted the youngster playing as a winger and made no qualms about his interest in bringing him to Fir Park. However his stay with Motherwell was somewhat brief as he would move onto St Johnstone in 1962. Perhaps the highlight of Bobby’s stay in Lanarkshire came when within a matter of weeks he managed to net an 89th minute equaliser against Celtic in January 1962 and netted in a fantastic 3-1 win over Dundee who of course would go onto win the League title that season, in the same match he was the victim of a crunching challenge by Ian Ure which left Bobby with ligament damage.

Bobby would enjoy some success at St Johnstone, having dropped down a division he was able to find the back of the net on a regular basis and helped the Saints win the Second Division title. On the back of this successful season he won a move to Celtic but his stay at Parkhead would be brief before moving back to Tayside this time with Dundee United. Before retiring Bobby also had spells with Airdrieonians, Berwick Rangers, Alloa Athletic and Dumbarton before going back to the junior scene. He finished his playing career with Saltcoats Victoria where he eventually became a coach then manager, Bobby enjoyed success with his first club Neilson where he managed to guide them to their first trophy in two decades.
