1926/27 First Division

John ‘Sailor’ Hunter had a fine side at his disposal in the 1926/27 season. The likes of John Johnman, Alan McClory, Bobby Ferrier, George Stevenson and Willie McFadyen were all vying for first team positions. In the 1903/04 season Third Lanark proudly won the League championship, the Old Firm would remain dominate over the next few decades as the like of nearest challengers Airdrieonians, Hearts and Morton couldn’t break the monopoly of the Glasgow sides.

Motherwell would have a fine season finishing 2nd, just five points behind Rangers. During the course of the season the side at times sat at the top of the tree but sadly bad results such as a 5-1 defeat at the hands of both St Mirren and Airdrieonians and the failure to beat Rangers ultimately put paid to the ‘Well title hopes. The previous best finish came in the 1919/20 campaign when the side finished 3rd.
