Tommy McLean signed Paul Baker from Hartlepool United in August 1992 for a fee of £77,500. He would only score the solitary goal in ten games this coming in a 3-3 draw against St Johnstone in September, this of course was hugely disappointing because he was a big powerful forward who had all the necessary tools to succeed in Scotland’s top tier, but for what ever reason he failed to make the impact expected. Paul would soon find himself on the road again joining English side Gillingham in January 1993 for the cut price fee of £40,000.
