John McStay joined Motherwell as a youngster in 1982 from Gartcosh. He is a member of the well-known McStay clan of whom his cousin Paul of Celtic is best known. His debut came at Bayview in January 1985, as Motherwell defeated East Fife 2-1. He then moved to Raith Rovers in July 1987.
It was while he was with the Kirkcaldy club that he was catapulted into national news. He was head-butted by Rangers striker Duncan Ferguson at a match at Ibrox, Ferguson was subsequently given a lengthy ban and jailed. John later served Clydebank, East Fife, Ayr United, Clyde and Albion Rovers.
