Signed in 1951 from Newarthill Hearts, Peter Cleland could not impose his right wing skills on the Motherwell first team scene. He played just a solitary game for the club, this coming in a 1-1 draw against Partick Thistle. His early career was somewhat interrupted by National Service, he would however be on the books of Norwich City and Cheltenham Town later in his career.
