Robert was playing football for Blantyre Vics before Rangers swooped for his signature. He was a tall, slim defender who could distribute the ball well. For the Glasgow side he only made one appearance as a substitute and this came against Hearts against Tynecastle in 1981. After a spell with Kilmarnock, Robert signed for Motherwell in 1984. In his short spell with the club he only managed to play in fourteen games scoring the one goal.
