Signed from Hamilton Accies, Tom got his chance for Motherwell in season 1933/34, due to injury to Willie McFadyen. Tom made his debut playing at centre forward against Partick Thistle at Fir Park, sadly, the game was lost 3-2. He did however get on the score sheet that day. His next appearance came just about a month later as Cowdenbeath came calling. Amazingly Motherwell ran out 6-1 winners with Crawley netting a hat-trick.
