
Motherwell signed John Gardiner from Dundee United in 1984 for a fee of £10,000, he went on to make 98 appearances for the club in all competitions, but he was unable to keep Ally Maxwell from the number 1 jersey and he was freed in 1987. He made his Motherwell debut in a 2-1 defeat at Clydebank. He later went on to manage successfully in the Highland League.
