As a youngster, Stephen Halliday signed up for his hometown club Sunderland. He failed to make the grade there and he joined English Third Division club Hartlepool United. ‘Well’s Finnish manager Harri Kampman made Stephen his first signing for the club, snapping him up for a fee of £50,000. He made his debut at the start of the 1998/99 season as ‘Well defeat St Johnstone 1-0 at Fir Park. Halliday first netted for the club in a 1-0 victory over East Fife in the League Cup but he found first team opportunities limited and over the space of two years at Fir Park, he only made 14 first team appearances, scoring a mere two goals both of which came in the League Cup competition. He enjoyed a loan spell with Carlisle United in 2000 but later that year he was released as manager Billy Davies looked to explore other attacking options. Stephen would briefly move onto Doncaster Rovers before joining Carlisle United on a permanent basis.
