John Johnman joined Motherwell in 1923, he was a useful player, as a defender he could put in a shift in any defensive position, but eventually he settled on the right back berth. John was one of the most whole hearted players to ever don a Motherwell jersey. In the 1931/32 Championship winning season, he only managed seven first team league appearances. He left the club shortly after this.
