Alex McLeish signed Joni Lehtonen in late 1996. A Finnish midfielder, aged 23, he made his debut coming on from the bench in a 4-2 win at Kilmarnock. His previous club had been FC Tampere but he found the jump from the amateur set up in Finland to the Scottish professional league just a little too much.
