Rejected as a youngster at Hibernian, Willie Pettigrew then went junior with East Kilbride Thistle, and with them he flourished scoring on a regular basis. He signed for Motherwell in 1973, making his debut in 1974, coming on as a substitute against St Johnstone on 27th October. Later on an excellent partnership was soon developed with former Liverpool star Bobby Graham signing for the club. Willie played in sides which reached semi-finals in the Scottish Cup and Texaco Cup. His last game for the club came in May 1979 against Rangers before joining Dundee United in August 1979 for £100,000. His stay on a Tayside proved successful. In his first season there, he scored 14 league goals, four in a dramatic 5-1 Scottish Cup win over Dundee and twice in the League Cup final as United won their first ever piece of silverware. Willie collected another League Cup winner’s medal, the next season against Dundee. He also had spells with Hearts, Greenock Morton and Hamilton Accies.
