Born in February 1906, full back James Mackrell joined the club in 1931. Despite only featuring in 2 games throughout the 1931/32 season he was to be a part of a squad who would write themselves into the clubs folklore. The 1931/32 campaign was when Motherwell broke the Old Firm’s monopoly and won the league title becoming the Champions of Scotland. Throughout the season the regular full back partnership was Ellis and Dowall and they proved to difficult to displace as they proved to be a robust partnership at the back. Covering for injuries and suspensions when required, James made his debut in Claret and Amber on the 31st October 1931 as ‘Well played host to Celtic at Fir Park as the sides drew 2-2, his other game that year saw him help the side to a 3-2 win over Falkirk.
In the 1932/33 season, James played in 8 first games but the arrival of Jimmy Crapnell basically cut Mackrells involvement to reserve duties only and he departed the club not long after.
