From Fairmuir Boys Club, Gary joined Dundee United in June 1989. After a successful spell at Tannadice he was snapped up by Walter Smith for Rangers. Three years at Ibrox seen him make fourteen appearances, including a loan spell with English club Wolves. In February 1998 he joined St Johnstone and in three years there he managed over 110 appearances, including 8 goals. His next career move saw him join newly promoted SPL club Livingston who were just about to embark on their first ever SPL campaign. His stay with the Livi Lions lasted only a year and a half, before he returned to Tannadice in January 2003. In a year back at Dundee Utd he managed only 15 games. From the recommendation of Terry Butcher’s assistant Maurice Malpas, TB snapped Gary up on a year and a half deal in January 2004. Within days of joining he made his debut against rangers at Ibrox in a 1-0 defeat. He’d only make another three appearances before being struck down with a knee injury which would keep him out for the duration of the season.
