Bobby Carberry arrived at Fir Park in 1979 coming from Alloa Athletic for a fee of £25,000 as it was clear reinforcements were needed to plug Motherwell’s leaky defence as they were being marooned at the bottom of the Premier League table. He made his debut against Aberdeen in a 1-1 draw in March 1979, but he would sit out the reverse fixture only two days later where the club would fall to heavy 8-0 defeat at Pittodrie – a club record defeat. The 1978/79 season would prove to be a massive disappointment as the club would slip to relegation. Bobby would be a regular for the first half of the following season before losing his place in the side, he did manage to score against Hearts in November 1979 in a 2-1 defeat.
