Joe Chalmers

Joe Chalmers began his footballing career with Celtic whom he joined at only ten years of age, like many youngsters before him his route to the Bhoys first team was barred due to the over abundance of international talent, hence by the time he left the club he had only made a handful of appearances. Joe did enjoy a spell on loan at Falkirk where he helped the Bairns gain a playoff spot, but unfortunately injury would rule himself out of that. It was mentioned upon his release from Celtic that he suffered numerous different injuries and ailments which would stunt his progress and would become a re-occurring theme during his spell with Motherwell.

Having secured their survival in the Scottish Premiership, Joe would become Motherwell’s first signing of the 2015/16 season signing a two year deal on the 4th June 2015, Joe had stated that the deal might not have happened had that club slipped to relegation.

Manager Ian Baraclough said of Chalmers –

“He’s a young player with fantastic potential who we’ve tracked for some time. He’s versatile, mobile with a good range of passing and will add competition in numerous positions in defence. He’s got a good pedigree having come through the Academy and played for Celtic’s first team and has significant youth international experience.”

It was first thought that he may be the long term replacement for Stevie Hammell who had just endured a horrendous campaign with injuries. Chalmers made his debut on the opening day of the season as ‘Well won 1-0 up in the Highlands against Inverness, Joe lined up in left midfield before reverting back to left back when Hammell would suffer from more injury woes.

Perhaps due to the side struggling in the league and suffering an embarrassing exit from the League Cup at the hands of Morton, Joe seemed to lack any real confidence and would often frustrate fans with stopping promising attacks dead by playing square or backwards passes. His best run of form for the club came in the opening months of the 2016/17 season which also seen him receive a call up to the Scotland u21 squad. Sadly however this run was brought to a halt due to more injuries taking their toll and he endured lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Chalmers did prove to be a versatile player as he filled in at left back, left midfield and centre midfield, however he did seem to lack the pace and mobility attributes Baraclough stated he had when he signed him. When fit Joe was alway in and around the match day squads but after a horror showing in a match where Dundee were 5-1 to the good at half time in a crucial league encounter at Fir Park, he wouldn’t resurface for the first team again in any manner. He would leave the club after the 2016/17 season came to an end.
