Left half, Matthew Eglington was born in Motherwell but it was actually over the other side of the Clyde where he enjoyed a degree of success. He started his career with Larkhall Thistle where his performances had alerted the likes of Rangers and Celtic but he opted to join Hamilton Academical. At Douglas Park he was unfortunate not to win a Scottish Cup medal as in the 1911 final the Aca’s drew the original match 0-0 at Ibrox before falling to a 2-0 defeat in the replay.
After making well over a century of appearances for the Aca’s Hamilton he arrived at Motherwell in May 1914 for a fee reported to be around £250. Sadly he wouldn’t make the same impression with his hometown team as he was limited to playing in nine league games. At the time of his retirement he was a foreman in Anderson Boyes.
