Elliott Frear

Winger, Elliott Frear began his footballing career with his hometown club Exeter City, unable to cement a starting berth consistently he gained experience when he was farmed out on loan to Tiverton Town and Salisbury City who played in the lower echelons of English football. Frear would eventually join Salisbury on a permanent deal upon his release from St James Park.

It was with Forest Green Rovers that he made quite an impression, helping the side to the National League 2016/16 Playoff Final, but ultimately his side fell to a defeat against Grimsby Town but he had actually went head to head against a future team mate Richard Tait on that occasion.

While Richard joined the club in the Summer of 2016, Frear was also approached by Motherwell but both clubs couldn’t agree on a fee for his transfer and it wouldn’t be until January 2017 that he finally arrived at Fir Park.

The Englishman could be perhaps forgiven by wondering exactly what he walked into when he arrived at the club as they were to go through a short turbulent period results wise. Fear made his debut against Rangers in a 0-2 defeat, this was followed up by defeats against Aberdeen where the side crashed to a 2-7 defeat and again with a 1-5 defeat versus Dundee where all the goals were scored in the first half. The season did threaten to come off the rails entirely but a change of management occurred and Elliott played a pivotal role in helping the club secure safety from relegation. In May he scored in a 3-1 win over Kilmarnock which put any fear of relegation to bed, three days previously his wonderfully flighted free kick against Hamilton was met by a Louis Moult looping header which also had secured a fine derby day win.

2017/18 proved to be more fruitful for the Winger, he managed to put 112 crosses into the box finding his man 33% of the time, statistically making him one of the most dangerous wingers that season. Despite having a few injury concerns the club enjoyed a somewhat successful season which seen a 7th place finish in the league but an amazing achievement was accomplished by reaching both domestic cup finals, sadly on both occasions the side fell to defeat, Frear came on as a substitute in both matches.

Manager Stephen Robinson seemed to prefer a 3-5-2 formation which essentially made Elliott a LWB, as he struggled for form Richard Tait would take up that position.

Perhaps a highlight of his time with Motherwell was scoring a 20 minute hat trick against Edinburgh City in the League Cup. Despite being offered a new contract he departed the club in the summer of 2019 having made 37 starts and 37 substitute appearances netting on 8 occasions.
