Young defender Paul Ferguson joined the club fromĀ Stoneyburn United in 1993 and went straight into the youth setup. Playing consistently well in Motherwell’s youth and reserve sides he was tipped to break into the side at Fir Park. With the likes of Brian Martin, Chris McCart, John Philliben and Miodrag Krivokapic occupying the defensive berths and the emergence of Steve McMillan and Greg Denham he found chances to break into the first team limited. It was in late 1995 that Alex McLeish gave Paul his top team debut when he was pitched in to face Kilmarnock on the 18th November, the game finished all square at 1-1. This was to be his first and only involvement as the return from injury of Dutchman Mitchell Van der Gaag pushed the youngster further down the pecking order. He departed the club in 1996 signing on with East Fife, Paul spent his career in playing for various lower league and junior sides.
