George Gillan arrived at Fir Park from Alloa Athletic in early August 1941 for a fee of £475. The inside-left played for the club during the unofficial war years when the side played in the Southern League. He perhaps caught the eye of the ‘Well staff while on loan at Celtic as he enjoyed getting on the scoresheet against Lanarkshire sides. Celtic were actually keen to take the player to Parkhead when his loan spell expired but while their board deliberated over the transfer, Motherwell made a firm offer which was accepted,
