Joe Johnston

Joe JohnstonJoe Johnston graduated from BB football and he came to Motherwell from Renfrew Juniors in 1937. He played on the outside-left, he was to go on and make so many fine appearances for Motherwell. Joe was a great player and a loyal club man, at the end of the 1951/52 season he joined Albion Rovers as a player/coach. He was another player whose career was robbed of continuity by the war. Joe was in the army so he had few opportunities to represent the club. When the season started again just after the war he came back and was challenged by Aitkenhead and Barclay and he never really established himself. His first Motherwell goal came in a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Third Lanark on the 11th December 1937. He also bagged a few hat-tricks in his career firstly in season 1941/42 in an exciting 6-2 win over Hearts and also in a 3-2 win over Greenock Morton in October 1947. The curtain came down on Joe’s career on 6th October 1951, in a 4-0 home win over Queen of the South.
