John was a member of the 1944 summer cup winning side and in 1950 he picked up a league cup winner’s medal against Hibernian because the unlucky Dick Hamilton was injured, Dick had played in every match in the run up to the final. Johnston was to also feature in two Scottish Cup finals, in 1951 he was in the side beaten by Celtic, but the following year he was to feature in all ten games as Motherwell marched to victory by easily defeating Dundee 4-0 at Hampden. He was to finally leave the club in 1955, as the much younger Hastie Weir, recruited from Queen’s Park, established himself. John died in law hospital on 21 January 1989, just one day after former team-mate Willie Redpath.
