John Joyce came to Motherwell at the time when Ian St John was the manager. Alongside Willie Pettigrew, John was one earmarked as one of a handful of reserves who would likely make the step up to the first team picture during the 1973/74 season. Initially brought in as a forward for the reserve side he would later transition into a right back, however despite breaking into the first team as expected, John would find first team appearances limited and he left the club in the 1974/75 campaign.
