Christy Manzinga arrived in Lanarkshire during the 2019/20 pre-season on a trial, he introduced himself in fine fashion when he netted a spectacular bicycle kick in a friendly against Gretna, videos of the goal were shared far and wide on social media and on various football shows.
The forward had begun his career with PSG in France signing as a 13 year old, he played in the same youth team as former ‘Well defender Cédric Kipré. Unable to break into the side he departed in his late teens and served French sides Lorient and Angers before moving to Belgium where he played for Royal Châtelet.
Manzinga made his Motherwell debut against St Johnstone on the 30th November 2019 where he came on as a substitute and scored in the last minute of play as the side registered a 4-0 win over the Perth side.
The 2019/20 season was of course brought to an abrupt end due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite having only made seven first team appearances for Motherwell he was departed the club on the 31st May 2020 as his contract expired. Manager, Stephen Robinson had suggested in interviews he was one player he may have liked to have a closer look at as he broke into the squad around February shortly before the UK went into lockdown, with the tightened purse strings the club couldn’t afford such luxuries.
Christy would join Northern Irish outfit Linfield where he enjoyed a fruitful first season as he not only secured a NIFL Premiership medal but he would enjoy an Irish cup win as well. While the trophy cabinet may have lain empty at the end of the 2021/22 season, Manzinga recorded a terrific goal haul of 20 in all competitions, but he would choose to depart Windsor Park at the end of the season.
