Willie Mason was somewhat of a late starter to professional football as he was 23 years old when he signed from Linlithgow Rose in 1954, he had actually just completed his national service which had impacted his early career. He was a tall slender defender, football ran in his family as his father George Mason was on the books for Falkirk, St Mirren and St Johnstone. Willie was unfortunate in that he played in the same position as Andy Paton so essentially his career at Fir Park was to provide back up when called upon, in all competitions Mason played in 29 first team games. In 1956 he joined Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton Accies, but just under a year later the Douglas Park side freed him and his next port of call was Stranraer.
