In 1971, Alistair joined Ayr United and his next port of call was Aberdeen. Indeed it was from there, Motherwell signed him in 1980 and he is one of those players who go into the one game wonders list. He was a good goalkeeper, but he was unable to dislodge Hugh Sproat from the number one position and he left in 1981. It was Ally MacLeod who signed him for Ayr United, Aberdeen and Motherwell so he was quite obviously a fan of this keeper. Other clubs he played for were St Mirren, Cumnock Juniors and Irvine Meadow. When his playing days ended, he became assistant manager to Alex McAnespie at Stranraer.
