Tommy McLean signed striker Dave MacCabe in September 1988 from local rivals Airdrieonians for a fee of £40,000. He had a decent record for the Diamonds as he had netted 66 goals in a 190 league games, with the 1985/86 being especially fruitful as he had a goal return of 20 during that season at Broomfield which obviously caught the attention of the ‘Well boss.
At Fir Park he struggled to replicate this form and after 16 uneventful appearances he found himself being loaned out to Kilmarnock before being allowed to leave in September 1990, he soon joined Morton. Dave was actually in the Morton side that faced Motherwell during the 1991 Scottish Cup run, the Cappielow side performed well in the tie over two legs taking the game to spot kicks.
