John McNeil was in the fine Hibernian squad of the 1950s, but he was unable to break into the first team. Motherwell signed him from the Edinburgh side and it was the same old story for John, with Charlie Cox and Willie Redpath at Fir Park, opportunities were obviously going to be rare, especially as Wilson Humphries, Charlie Aitken and Jim Forrest were also on board. McNeil was released at the end of the 1955 season having played in just five league games without netting.
