Signed from Douglas Water Thistle in 1957, John McPhee was one of the later batch of ‘Ancell Babes’. He stayed with Motherwell for five seasons and in that time, he was one of the more influential Fir Park players. McPhee was versatile and could play both on the wing and as a centre midfielder. He scored in the 5-2 cup rout of Rangers at Ibrox in March 1961. He was watched enviously by several other clubs and he was eventually sold to Blackpool in August 1962 for £10,000 as Ancell struggled to hold onto his talented young squad in the face of rich earnings in England. For Blackpool, John made 250 outings between 1962 and 1969 before having spells with Barnsley and Southport.
