Kevin MacDonald came through the youth ranks at the club progressing through the under 18,19 and 21 squads before Terry Butcher gave him his top team debut against Dundee on the last day of the 2001/02 campaign. He had already sampled a bit of top team action as he was given a run out against Italian side Chievo a few day earlier who had played the side in a friendly match, this of course was sort of a fund raiser as the club had slipped into interim administration only a few weeks earlier which saw nineteen player lose their jobs. Over the next two seasons he was a fringe member of the squad usually playing when Derek Adams was banned or when the squad was seemingly sort on numbers through injuries. At the end of the 2003/04 season he was allowed to leave on a free transfer, he was snapped up by Second Division new boys Stirling Albion.
