John Neal was described as a cultured right back, between 1897 and 1899 he had played in 36 league games for Motherwell. In his short football career he would go on to serve Airdrieonians, St Mirren and Hamilton Academical. He departed Fir Park on the 20th February 1899 and headed to rivals Airdrie, his stay at Broomfield was brief before he ending up in Paisley and by the November of the same year he arrived in Hamilton, in an era where you found players would generally have longevity at one club, John had been on the books at four in one year alone. At Douglas Park he had played in 14 games but in 1900 it was reported that he had left Scotland and was on his way to America.
