Signed from Ayrshire outfit Muirkirk Amateurs in 1955, Maxwell Nelson would only make one appearance for Motherwell in his two year stint at Fir Park and that came in a 0-0 draw against Falkirk at Brockville in November 1955. He was signed to play in the left wing position, unfortunately for Maxwell that particular role was nailed down by the talented Johnny Aitkenhead, who has saw off many previous suitors for the role and Nelson would be no different. In 1957 the club decided to let the winger go, he headed to Cappielow to join Morton but again he made little impact before bowing out of the senior game in 1958.
