William Newbigging joined Motherwell in 1921 from his hometown club Larkhall Thistle, a left back Newbigging would stay with the club for four years playing in 71 first team games without scoring. Throughout his four year association with the club, the side never had any real highlights as in the league the side generally finished around mid-table. After a short stint with Royal Albert back in his native Larkhall, he signed for St Mirren where he would enjoy some cup success when they won the 1926 Scottish Cup Final.
