21 year old defender Darragh O’Connor arrived at Fir Park in July 2021 after his departure from English Premiership side Leicester City. Prior to joining the Foxes he had actually been on the books of Wexford in the League of Ireland who were playing in the First Division, Darragh would not only make his first senior appearance in football during the 2019 season but he managed to play in 20 league games which ultimately caught the attention of the Leicester scouts.
At Motherwell he featured in all four of the opening League Cup group games making his debut against Queen’s Park at Firhill as the Steelmen recorded a 1-0 victory.
On the opening day of the league season he slipped out of the team as Bevis Mugabi returned from injury and before too long Scandinavian due Juhani Ojala and Sondre Solholm Johansen had arrived at the club which pushed O’Connor further down the pecking order. The young defender would actually only make one league appearance for the club and this was literally limited to mere minutes as he came on as a late substitute at Almondvale as the side went into defensive mode to see out a victory against Livingston.
Darragh would be farmed out on loan to struggling Championship side Queen of the South in January 2022 where he played in 17 games where he scored once. The Doonhamer’s would ultimately slip to relegation at the end of the season, the side from Dumfries had also got to the Challenge Cup final but that too ended in disappointment as they lost 3-1 to Raith Rovers.
After only one season in Lanarkshire, he left the club when his contract expired, however he was quickly signed by Championship outfit Greenock Morton.
