Born in Dumbarton in 1885, James Stewart or Jimmy, was a small inside forward who featured regularly in that position for Motherwell between 1906 and 1909, he compensated for his lack of physical advantages by adroitness with the call and alertness in snapping up chances. Despite starting out on the left flank with ‘Well, it was as an inside-right forward where he played for Liverpool.
Down in Merseyside he played in 63 games scoring a reasonable 26 goals. Upon leaving Liverpool he returned north to Lanarkshire but this time he joined rivals Hamilton Acas. James was a trainer at Blackpool for a long spell before being appointed at Dundee where he stayed only one season and then moved to the south coast to train the players of Portsmouth in 1937.
