Liam Shaw

Born in Sheffield on the 12th March 2001, it was actually with his hometown club Sheffield Wednesday that Liam Shaw started his football career. At the age of eight he joined the Hillsborough outfit and worked his way through all the levels before breaking into the first team scene as a teenager.

The defensive midfielder opted to join Celtic upon the expiry of his contract when he was only 20 years old at the end of the 2020/21 season. Having only made a handful of first team appearances for the Bhoy’s six months into his stay in Parkhead he was farmed out on loan in January 2022 with Motherwell pipping Premiership rivals St Johnstone for his signature.

On paper it seemed like a terrific signing for the club but for whatever reason his time in Lanarkshire won’t really be viewed as a massive success. Liam made his ‘Well debut in 0-0 draw versus Hibernian coming on as a late substitute but he would get his first start days later against Hearts as the Steelmen fell to a 2-0 defeat in Edinburgh. The following fixture he would suffer from what was reported as ‘blurred vision’ against St Mirren and he wouldn’t start another game for the club instead making fleeting appearances for the bench here and there, by the time his loan spell came to an end he had only featured in eight-first team games.

It’s perhaps worth mentioning, despite the side enjoying a strong start to the 2021/22 season, after the league fixtures kicked off again after the winter break they would struggle for form and would only register five wins in all competitions for the rest of the season. While Shaw may not have set the heather on fire during his spell in North Lanarkshire, all things considered the side won four games, drew three times and lost only once in all of his appearances.

Liam’s most notable performance in claret and amber was no doubt coming on as a second half substitute at Ibrox as the side were getting beat 2-0, but a stunning performance in the second half would see the side comeback and salvage a draw.
