Signed for the club in 1925, Dave Thackeray was brought into help bolster the squad as the 1924/25 season almost ended in disaster as the club just narrowly avoided relegation, Third Lanark, Ayr United and Motherwell all finished on 30 Points but thankfully the ‘well’s superior goal difference kept them in Scotland’s top division. Certainly a decent addition to the team, Davie would stay with Motherwell for three seasons, helping them almost win the league in 1926/27, which capped an amazing transformation in the clubs fortunes. Thackeray made his ‘Well debut on 15th August 1925 against Clydebank at Fir Park where the Steelmen won 2-1. He did also enjoy the club’s tour of Spain in 1927 and also contributed well as he netted against Swansea City in a 4-3 win, Real Madrid in a 3-1 win, and finally Celta Vigo in a 4-0 win. He was sold to Portsmouth for £3,500 in 1928, he left having played in 116 games, netting twice.
