Derek signed for Motherwell as a twenty-one-year-old in February 1984 from Shotts Bon Accord. Derek made 2 appearances in March, against Hibernian and Celtic, in the Scottish Cup and it could be argued justifiably that he was thrown in at the deep end far too soon. Under Tommy McLean in 1984/85 he had a handful of reserve appearances before being released by the club.
